Silage, hay, bale silage… are the most efficient feed for the herd but only if of quality! In a context of production cost control, the main issue of livestock operations is harvesting all of the feeding value of meadows to reduce concentrate costs.

For a clean and uniform cut

Oval discs:

Promote forage flow towards the swath and therefore avoid double cutting and related crop losses.

OPTIDISC cutter bar:
  • Optimized crop flow to the conditioner and onto the swath respectively, especially true for high crop volume and faster working speeds.
  • Improved quality of cut due to reduced distance between the discs, which diverge at the cutting zones.

Optimized ground pressure:
  • The kinematics of the suspension spring are designed with this in mind on GMD 100 series mowers.
  • On mowers with the hydro-pneumatic LIFT-CONTROL suspension, the ground pressure is easily adjustable and always remains constant.

A wide, finger rotor adjustment range:

36 different settings facilitate the adaptation of the conditioning intensity to forage type, crop maturity and weather conditions.

  • Choice of two conditioning rotor speeds.

  • Pressure between the rollers is adjustable to allow for various crop characteristics (soft or hard stems).

Adjust swath delivery as required

Wide spread or create swaths:

Soil moisture content, weather conditions and the subsequent harvest chain are important factors influencing the choice of forage delivery.

  • For mowers, KUHN offers different models and options which can reduce the swath width. This prevents the tractor wheels from driving on the forage.
  • On KUHN mower-conditioners, both swath delivery and wide spreading are state of the art.

Efficient tedding and complete forage turn-over

Tine design:

Performance based design with large coils to ensure uniform delivery, even in heavy crop.

Large pitch angle:

Small rotors combined with a large angle of pitch are responsible for a steeper forage trajectory, therefore completely turning over the forage and ensuring it is well aerated to promote faster drying.

How to avoid crop contamination

Wide wheels:

Reduce compaction and allow a more constant distance between the tines and the soil surface – especially important on uneven ground.

Distance between wheels & tines:

To ensure excellent ground adaptation and prevent the incorporation of soil in the crop, the wheels are positioned very close to the tines.

Front support wheel:

For maximum protection of the sward, an additional front wheel can be mounted which proves especially useful on hilly terrain.

Aid drying process when making hay

Night windrows:

In certain locations with heavy dew formation, or in late summer, it may make sense to create night windrows. All KUHN tedders may be used to make these as their gearboxes allow working with reduced rotor speeds.

Clean raking without crop losses

Hyper-tangential tine arms:

Combined with the optimized tine design, this feature facilitates raking of heavy forage such as wilted silage as well as dry cuttings.

  • The double curved tine arms reduce the distance between tine passages reducing risk of forage being left unraked.
  • In the case of heavy forage, the adjustment of the rotor´s lateral pitch angle helps to balance crop pressure on the tines to maintain a constant raking height.

3D rotor suspension:

The 3D rotor suspension provides a wide range of rotor travel in each direction and ensures superb ground adaptation and clean raking.

Raking height adjustment:

In certain conditions (e.g. when straw stubble has been left long or when working with arable forage crops) the ability to increase rotor height can be advantageous. This may be achieved on KUHN rakes either by the addition of bolt-on spacers or through an in-cab rotor adjustment system (depending on model & specification).

This high performance machine is specially recommended for delicate crops (e.g. alfalfa, rye, sorghum, etc.) as the forage is collected and transferred to the swath very gently.

Avoiding soil incorporation in the crop

Accurate ground contour following:

Achieved with features such as the 3D rotor suspension, wide wheels and because tine-to-wheel distance is reduced as much as possible.

Bogie axle:

These axles stabilize rotor movement and avoid that the soil is damaged on uneven ground.

Rotor “touch-down” parallel to soil:

The jet effect combined with the rotor suspension locking system STABILIFT allows the rotors to be lowered almost in parallel to the ground, even on rugged terrain. The tines don´t contact the soil and crop contamination is prevented.

Belt merger:

Operators testify to the reduced soil contamination and windrows free of stones. This is of particular value to biogas plants who must reduce soil content in the digester as far as possible. Farmers milking high-performance dairy cows also appreciate this machine as it helps them to achieve forage of high digestibility.

Uniform and fluffy windrows without lumps or twists

Rotary rakes:

The rotary rake concept offers distinct advantages over simpler and cheaper raking techniques. They will, for example, create fluffier windrows without forage becoming entangled.

Double curved tine arms & steep cam track:

These special tine arms together with the steep cam track ensure that the tines are only raised at the last minute, when they are already positioned at 90° to the windrow. This feature ensures a fluffy forage delivery perpendicular to the windrow and prevents rolled or twisted forage which would reduce the performance of the following harvesting machinery.

Boost function:

For high-performance four rotor rakes, KUHN offers the option to increase the front rotor speed, according to differing crop properties, in order that an airy windrow is delivered at all times. This function, exclusive to KUHN, ensures that the forage is more easily and quickly collected by the forage-harvester pick-ups and so reduce the time for which forage is left on the field.

General requirements for balers to harvest a high forage quality

  • Easy setting of the working height of the pick-up, which has a good ground adaptation

All KUHN LSB balers, cutting or non-cutting versions are equipped with the INTEGRAL ROTOR. This simple, maintenance free intake system ensures even feeding regardless of the various (crop) conditions. The short distance between rotor and pick-up yields an outstanding crop flow. This force-fed intake makes higher forward speeds possible for outstanding productivity and reduced crop damage.

To use the machine at maximum capacity, a flawless protection system is required. All main intake components of the KUHN LSB balers are fitted with a cam type clutch. With this non-stop safety system you can unblock the machine from the operator seat. The pickup, Integral Rotor and feeder fork are protected with cam-type torque limiters, which are automatically activated in the event of an overload. Another benefit of these clutches is that they give the ability to drive at a constant speed without worrying about blockages.

One of the last steps in creating a perfect bale is the knot. With the knotting options on your KUHN LSB you can be sure of a reliable and secure knotting system that meets your requirements.

TWIN STEP Knotting:

The unique TWIN STEP knotting system compromises a single knotter and smart system that releases the twine tension during the knotting cycle. The result is a secure, easy to adjust knotting system.

Double Knotting:

The LSB D models are equipped with a double knotting system. With the electronic knotter control, the driver has accurate information concerning twine tension at all times and receives an alarm in case of risk. The knotting progress can be monitored directly from the tractor cab.

The uniquely designed features of KUHN bale wrappers make them stand out in the market. The pre-stretchers, film cutters, wrapping table and low-profile chassis design make KUHN bale wrappers simple, convenient, fast and efficient.

General requirements for wrappers to harvest a high forage quality

  • Airtight packaging of the bales
  • Easy height adjustment of the film dispenser(s) to the diameter of the bale dimensions
  • Sufficient pre-stretching of the film according to the guidelines of the film producers, to ensure an optimal adhesive effect of the film
  • Proper film overlap during the wrapping process
  • Free choice and simple setting of the desired number of film layers around the bale<.li>

e-Twin technology:

The innovative e-Twin technology enables to wrap via a unique combined pre-stretcher design with patented film distribution to save on wrapping time and also on film costs. Two 750mm film wraps with 2/3 overlap are glued together providing a double layer before they leave the pre-stretcher unit. Unique advantages of e-Twin:

  • Save 50% wrapping time
  • Further film saving achieved by increased pre-stretch ratio
  • Tighter wrapped bales increases the airtightness and so quality to feed
  • Extreme tear resistance under all circumstances

INTELLIWRAP uses sophisticated electronics and hydraulics to monitor the wrapping process and continuously controls the film overlap, allowing total flexibility. Depending on local circumstances, crop conditions and storage periods the operator simply adjusts the amount of requested film layers via the terminal. INTELLIWRAP automatically matches this request to the various bale dimensions. Overall this system provides excellent distribution of the film around the bale and precise overlap for maximum film efficiency and increased silage quality.

AUTOLOAD function:

AUTOLOAD is an innovative system that automatically picks up a bale with the loading arm and puts it on the wrapping table, without any action needed from the driver. The patented “AUTOLOAD function’’ enables the operator to fully concentrate on the driving process, while the wrapping process is automatically started after the bale has been detected in the loading arm. Picking up a second bale with the loading arm, during the wrapping process for transport, is fully automated as well.
